Have you ever wondered what is the value of free Software for the world?
I think it is invaluable, but let’s try to figure out how important is, as assigning a monetary value is almost impossible.
Let’s first talk about small things.
Personal computers
Now a days personal computers are really important, everybody in the family need access to one (could be the same one). Kids need it for daily homework, it is needed for work, emails, and almost anything you can imagine.
I am going to focus this from the third world point of view, as it is usually not completely understood in U.S. and Europe.
In Latin America for example, a normal salary might be 200 to 500 dollars a month for a lot of people. So, lots of families can only afford a Netbook at home, which may cost some 200 dollars, it will surely come with Linux or Windows (XP or 7).
Let’s suppose it has Windows installed (Linux will work out of the box). There is now the need to install some Office Suite to make it useful for daily chores
